Ebola (Bundibugyo Strain) Outbreak: DRC & Uganda Declared a Global Health Emergency

On May 17, 2026, the World Health Organization officially classified the Ebola Bundibugyo virus outbreak in DRC and Uganda as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) - the highest global alert level. The outbreak was first confirmed in Ituri Province (northeastern DRC) on May 15, 2026, and has since spread across Nord-Kivu, Sud-Kivu, and into Uganda's capital, Kampala. Cross-border movement and population displacement are accelerating transmission risks. No licensed vaccines or specific treatments currently exist for the Bundibugyo strain, making surface decontamination, waste disinfection, and rigorous sanitation the frontline defence.

Bed Bug Awareness Week 2026: Know the Signs, Get Professional Help

The first week of June each year focuses on Bed Bug Awareness-a campaign promoted by the Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA) through media initiatives to educate the public about this persistent pest.

Bed bugs are small brownish insects with flat oval bodies that look similar to apple seeds. They live off the blood of humans or animals and are attracted to the carbon dioxide we exhale. They hide in small spaces and crevices, making them extremely difficult to detect. Female bed bugs produce over 100 dust-sized offspring in a lifetime.

While they don't fly, bed bugs move quickly over floors, walls, and ceilings. They enter buildings through luggage, clothing, purses, laptop cases, and used furniture such as mattresses, box springs, sofas, and chairs. Infestations spike in spring and summer due to heavy travel. Though they don't transmit disease, they bite-leaving small red marks often found in lines on skin. Even the cleanest homes can become infested.
